Laboratory of Health Materials

The establishment of a new R&D center to answer to the needs of health conscious consumers

With the objectives of a safe and secure supply of health materials, the Laboratory of Health Materials has promoted the search for natural health materials, and evaluation of their efficacy and safety.

The Laboratory of Health Materials was established in October, 2005 with a view to search for effective natural health materials, and evaluate their efficacy and safety. Together with the Flavor R&D Division, Fragrance R&D Division, Flavor System & Technology Laboratory, and a newly established Analytical Laboratory, these five research divisions will respond to the demands of the customer.

The Laboratory of Health Materials searches for effective natural health materials and active principles, and evaluates their efficacy and safety. Each active principle in a natural product has a characteristic biological activity corresponding to its structure. The Laboratory of Health Materials is focusing on the third function (biological regulation function) of food. From the viewpoint of investigating a variety of efficacies and guarantee for their safe use, the Laboratory of Health Materials has joint research studies with outside institutes.

The research results are published as presentations at conferences and in many journals. Recently, the biological activities of polyphenol in peppermint extract, isothiocyanate in wasabi extract, and saponin in tea extract were reported. As for our original technology, some patents were applied for and effectively used as our intellectual properties.

Only those health materials with a high safety, which are selected from many effective health materials, are transferred to the development stage.

Thus, with the objectives of a safe and secure supply of health materials based on the scientific studies, the Laboratory of Health Materials is continuing its detailed investigations.
