Using imagination and grasping general images

 While the Flavor R&D Division develops aromas and tastes for foods and beverages, the Fragrance R&D Division develops fragrances for perfumes and such daily necessities as soaps, shampoos and air fresheners.

The Fragrance R&D Division is characterized by its "artistic" nature. Developing flavors for foods and beverages, the Flavor R&D Division often aims for "authentic" flavors .On the other hand, the Fragrance R&D Division is often demanded to give shape to a vague image, which requires a delicate sensibility. The staff combines different materials and develop fragrances as if painting on a canvas. For example, some customers request fragrances with vague images, such as fragrances of "the ocean," "the moon and the sun," or "wintry sky." In order to actually develop fragrances with such images, we have to not only use our own imagination but also grasp the general images through discussions with many people from different backgrounds. For example, the question "What does the word 'ocean' remind you of?" may draw such answers as "the fragrance of coconuts" or "the fragrance of seaweed and the sea breeze." Also, fragrances are often associated with colors; for instance, there are fragrances that link to white, red or yellow. To make such associations with words is, therefore, a good way to grasp the image. Moreover, the Flavor R&D Division and Fragrance R&D Division each have a marketing section, which explores and clarifies generally held images. Our perfumers' task lies in creating the actual fragrances based on these images. As experts on fragrances, they create unique fragrances, such as "the ocean," when requested. This capability is what distinguishes Ogawa's Fragrance R&D Division. It is a selling point that appeals not only to our customers but also to consumers in general, and contributes to developing a new market for fragrances.

Our response to the diversifying demands for fragrances

 Newly created fragrances are actually used and evaluated. For instance, soaps and air fresheners emit different fragrances according to how and where they are used. For this reason, we develop the trial products, i.e. soaps, air fresheners, etc to confirm their effects. Our center is fully equipped with washbasins and bathtubs especially for evaluation tests. It is also important to acknowledge that final products like shampoos cannot attract consumers simply by smelling good. We need to take caution so that the ingredients included in the shampoo and the created fragrances do not produce an unpleasant smell when combined.

Another characteristic of the Fragrance R&D Division is its application ability. Fragrances originally created for perfumes can also be used in shampoos and other daily necessities. Toiletries containing fragrances of foods, such as "a peach-scented body wash," have recently been popular. In these cases, we research new ways to utilize food-based materials in fragrance development, thereby constantly expanding the range of usable materials.
